McLaren Drivers Defend Team Strategy Following Monza Controversy
Monza, Italy – McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have addressed the recent controversy surrounding team orders during the Italian Grand Prix, asserting that they have sufficient freedom to compete for the drivers’ championship despite external criticisms.
During the race, McLaren instructed Piastri to yield his position to Norris after a slow pit stop hindered Norris’s performance and cost him valuable championship points. While acknowledging the difficult decision made by the team, both drivers emphasized the complexity of such calls.
Piastri commented, “Ultimately, I didn’t deserve to finish higher than third, regardless of what else happened in the race… there’s no right answer to that decision.” He noted that any alternatives would have similarly drawn mixed reactions from fans.
Reflecting on McLaren’s strategy, Piastri expressed confidence in their ability to navigate the championship landscape: “We have enough freedom to control our own destiny.” He confirmed that constructive discussions have happened since Monza, clarifying team intentions moving forward.
Norris supported this view, explaining that the pit wall’s instructions during races do not inhibit their racing dynamics. “For 99% of things, we’re free to race… as soon as our positions were re-established, Oscar could race me freely,” he said, drawing parallels to past race scenarios.
Both drivers acknowledged that team decisions are inevitably scrutinized, particularly given McLaren’s current standing at the top of both championships. Norris remarked, “In the world we live in, negativity often overshadows positivity. We continue to do things our way, and whether people agree with it or not, it’s not our problem.”
As McLaren edges closer to securing the constructors’ championship, Piastri and Norris appear committed to maintaining a competitive spirit while balancing team directives.
