Racing Bulls Embrace Driver Development Amid Transitional Phase
Milton Keynes, UK — Racing Bulls’ team principal Laurent Mekies considers the departures of drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson to Red Bull as integral successes, albeit challenging for team performance. Despite the inconsistent line-ups that have arisen from the ongoing Red Bull driver shuffle, Mekies remains focused on the dual objectives of competitiveness and talent development.
“Inseason 2025, we faced strategic setbacks that cost us points," Mekies stated. "However, we are progressively aligning with the ambitious targets set for us to contend in F1’s tightly packed upper midfield.”
As the competition intensifies among teams like Williams, Haas, Alpine, and Aston Martin, Racing Bulls has developed a car capable of consistently fighting for points. The team’s drivers have faced increased pressure this season, especially after losing Tsunoda, who has now progressed to Red Bull following a notable growth period in his career.
Mekies noted on the James Allen on F1 podcast, “If our drivers attract the attention of the wider Red Bull family, it signifies success. While the need to develop drivers can conflict with our performance goals, we take pride in having two drivers ready for promotion to Red Bull Racing.”
Key Developments
-
Liam Lawson’s Return: Lawson has rejoined Racing Bulls following Tsunoda’s promotion, marking his third stint with the team. His recent qualifying performance shows promise, as he outpaced Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar in Saudi Arabia, although his race pace still demands improvement.
-
Support for Lawson: Mekies expressed confidence in Lawson’s capabilities and emphasized continuous support for his development. “He has learned to adapt and improve on the speed he displayed last year,” Mekies said. “We expect him to shine as he gains more experience.”
- Tsunoda’s Progression: Mekies hailed Tsunoda’s recent elevation to Red Bull as deserved recognition of his exceptional growth, particularly in his fourth and fifth years in F1. “This is a great moment for Yuki. He has shown extraordinary improvement that reflects his dedication,” Mekies added.
As Racing Bulls navigates this transitional phase, the focus remains clear: to foster talent that not only competes fiercely in the current season but also contributes meaningfully to the Red Bull legacy.
