Red Bull Racing Appoints Laurent Mekies as New Team Principal and CEO
In a significant organizational shift, Red Bull Racing has appointed Laurent Mekies as the new CEO and team principal, succeeding Christian Horner, who has been released from his operational duties after a two-decade tenure guiding the team since its debut in Formula 1 in 2005.
Mekies, previously team principal at Racing Bulls, expressed his gratitude and excitement in a video message: “It’s an honor to be part of this group of brilliant people that embody the Red Bull spirit,” he stated. He recognized the legacy of Horner, emphasizing, “Together we will achieve great results, building on the incredible legacy left by Christian Horner.”
Before his role at Racing Bulls, Mekies held prominent positions including deputy team principal at Ferrari and deputy race director at the FIA. He underscored the readiness of the team for future challenges, maintaining continuity as he transitions within Red Bull’s ranks. “I stay in the family and go across the road,” he noted, signaling confidence in his successor’s capabilities.
Expressions of gratitude toward Horner flooded social media, with long-time advisor Helmut Marko reflecting, “Christian and I have worked together very successfully for over 20 years… We helped develop two world drivers’ champions and several grand prix winners.”
As Red Bull Motorsport continues its campaign with 12 races remaining in the season, Marko affirmed the team’s commitment: “We will continue to fight for the drivers’ championship as long as it’s mathematically possible.” Max Verstappen also shared his appreciation for Horner’s leadership, remarking on their shared successes—including four world championships and numerous records.
This transition places Mekies at the helm of one of the most successful teams in modern motorsport, poised to build upon its rich heritage.
