Antonelli Makes History with Sprint Race Pole in Miami

Miami, FL — In a bold move that has paid immediate dividends, Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the Miami sprint race, becoming the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to achieve this feat. The 18-year-old’s performance underscores Mercedes’ strategic gamble in promoting him to a competitive seat ahead of the 2025 season.

Antonelli, who previously faced skepticism after a crash in his debut practice session last year at Monza, has since scored 38 points in the current season. His remarkable adaptability at the Miami circuit was evident as he topped the qualifying session, finishing ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff defended the decision to fast-track Antonelli’s career, stating, “There were voices suggesting he should have a preparation year at Williams, but we believed in his potential within our own team. We aim for him to be fully prepared for the new regulations next year.”

Wolff acknowledged the nature of risk in nurturing young talent, emphasizing, “We were willing to take that risk, even if it meant facing mistakes. The mileage he has accrued is yielding results, allowing him to perform at this level.”

Reflecting on Antonelli’s development, Wolff recalled watching him as a young talent in the garage and expressed pride in his rapid progress. “It feels like just yesterday he was wide-eyed, absorbing everything. His speed is incredible, especially given his unfamiliarity with the track. This is a significant milestone; however, we must remain focused on the upcoming qualifying and the main race.”

As anticipation builds for the weekend’s events, Antonelli’s achievement marks a pivotal moment for both him and Mercedes, laying a promising foundation for the challenges ahead.
