Lando Norris Secures Victory in Sao Paulo Sprint Amid Piastri Crash

Sao Paulo, Brazil – Lando Norris bolstered his position in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship with a commanding victory in the Sao Paulo Sprint, extending his lead while his primary competitor, Oscar Piastri, suffered an early exit from the race.

Starting from pole, Norris maintained a steady lead as Kimi Antonelli, who began in second, battled to fend off Piastri’s early advances. However, on lap 6, Piastri misjudged the wet curb at Turn 2, leading to a spin that saw him crash into the wall at Turn 3, effectively ending his race.

The incident prompted a red flag, allowing additional crews to clear the track of Piastri’s stricken McLaren and other debris. Upon the race’s restart on lap 9 under rolling start conditions, Norris capitalized on a tire strategy shift, moving from medium to soft tires—a decision that initially granted him a performance edge.

Despite his early pace, Norris faced significant pressure from Antonelli, who had opted for the opposite tire strategy. As the race neared its conclusion, Antonelli reduced Norris’s lead to six-tenths by lap 20, devising maneuvers in the DRS zones. However, Norris adeptly managed his pace, maintaining a stronger performance in the middle sector to retain his advantage.

The race finished under double waved yellow flags following a first-corner crash involving local driver Gabriel Bortoleto. Norris crossed the line first, securing victory by 0.845 seconds over Antonelli. George Russell took third, followed by Max Verstappen in fourth. Charles Leclerc rounded out the top five after struggling to overtake Fernando Alonso, who finished in sixth position—the latter securing his first Sprint points since Qatar 2023.

Pierre Gasly finished eighth, marking Alpine’s first points in eight races. Lance Stroll and Isack Hadjar completed the top ten, with Hadjar benefitting from Bortoleto’s crash to advance.
