Verstappen Remains a Title Threat After Strong São Paulo Drive
Lando Norris has reaffirmed that Max Verstappen will pose a significant challenge in the remaining races of the season and should not be ruled out of the championship battle. Following a remarkable recovery drive, Verstappen finished on the podium at the São Paulo Grand Prix, narrowing the gap to 49 points from championship leader Norris, with 83 points still up for grabs.
Norris acknowledged Verstappen’s potential, stating, “I’m sure he’s going to be a threat in terms of races, and you never know with the championship… He probably would have won if he started higher up.” The McLaren driver emphasized the unpredictable nature of racing, highlighting that mistakes can occur, but he remains focused on maximizing his performance.
As the drivers head to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Verstappen will need to limit his losses to Norris to no more than eight points to maintain a viable title challenge before the penultimate round in Qatar. However, Verstappen expressed skepticism about McLaren’s competitive stance in Las Vegas, citing previous performance struggles.
“Cooler temperatures hinder, for sure. I think it was our worst race last year… Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari were incredibly strong, while we were at the bottom of those four,” he noted. Nevertheless, Verstappen remains optimistic about enhancements made this season and looks forward to stronger showings in the later rounds in Abu Dhabi and Qatar.
The upcoming Las Vegas event will be critical as the championship race intensifies, with Norris determined to solidify his lead and Verstappen keen to close the gap.
