Ocon Reflects on Departure from Alpine as He Joins Haas
Montreal, Canada – Esteban Ocon addressed his departure from Alpine at the Canadian Grand Prix, highlighting a disconnect between his aspirations and the team’s trajectory. Ocon, who is set to leave Alpine at the end of 2024 after a five-year tenure, emphasized his need for new challenges amid significant turmoil within the team.
Alpine, currently languishing in 10th place in the constructors’ standings following the resignations of key personnel including team principal Otmar Szafnauer and sporting director Alan Permane, has been in a state of flux. Recent changes include the hiring of Oliver Oakes and Flavio Briatore, but Oakes’ abrupt resignation after the 2025 Miami Grand Prix has left Briatore with the reins.
In his remarks to Motorsport.com, Ocon acknowledged Alpine’s struggles: “You never smile to see someone struggling. It was clear that we were not aiming for the same things, and I needed a new challenge. We didn’t agree on so many things.” Despite Alpine’s current performance, where they have shown pace at various circuits, Ocon believes improvement is possible: “In one race, you can recover the deficit you have. Even though they’re last now, it doesn’t mean that’s where they’ll finish.”
Ocon has joined Haas for the 2025 season, teaming up with rookie Oliver Bearman. The team is currently positioned 7th in the constructors’ standings, with Ocon sitting in 10th place in the drivers’ standings, amassing 20 points thus far.
As he transitions to this new chapter, Ocon maintains fond memories of his time at Alpine: “Alpine will always remain a special place in my heart… but for sure, we will erase the late part of my career there.”
This shift comes at a crucial time for both Ocon and Haas, setting the stage for a fresh start amidst the ongoing competitive landscape of Formula 1.
