Verstappen Claims Sprint Victory at Belgian Grand Prix Amid Red Bull Leadership Transition
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium – Max Verstappen demonstrated unwavering commitment to Red Bull Racing by winning the Sprint at the Belgian Grand Prix, marking a strong start for the team following the departure of team principal Christian Horner. This victory, which saw Verstappen overtake Oscar Piastri, underscores the Dutch driver’s dedication to the team despite recent organizational changes.
Verstappen emphasized his loyalty, stating, “The team can always count on me… I’m always trying to give them the best possible result.” He praised the positive atmosphere under interim team principal Laurent Mekies, who celebrated his first competitive victory at the helm. Verstappen noted that while the transition is still in its early stages, the initial dynamics appear encouraging.
Reflecting on the changes, Verstappen remarked, “It’s very difficult to, within two weeks, suddenly say a lot of things need to change… It’s about starting the relationship and understanding how everyone is operating.” He expressed satisfaction with Mekies’ motivation and approach, indicating a constructive working relationship thus far.
However, qualifying posed challenges, with Verstappen securing fourth position after a slip on his final lap. He acknowledged that there was potential for a better performance, particularly in overtaking Charles Leclerc for third. “Q3 wasn’t very good… the first set just didn’t have the same grip… I couldn’t put the power down,” he explained.
Verstappen is aware of the competition, noting McLaren’s strength in wet conditions, but remains focused on attaining a podium finish. “For me, the goal is at least P3,” he affirmed, setting the stage for an intense race on Sunday.
