FIA Suspends Steward Derek Warwick for Controversial Comments Ahead of Canadian Grand Prix
Montreal, Canada – FIA steward Derek Warwick has been suspended for the upcoming Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix following unauthorized media comments that drew criticism toward several drivers, including Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda. The FIA’s decision to relieve Warwick, a veteran with four Grand Prix podiums, from his duties comes in response to quotes attributed to him by a gambling firm and subsequently circulated by various media outlets.
Warwick’s comments also addressed an incident involving Max Verstappen’s collision with George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix, for which verstappen received a 10-place grid penalty. In an official statement, the FIA confirmed Warwick’s suspension, stating: “Following recent unauthorized media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix."
In his absence, Enrique Bernoldi will officiate from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva. According to the FIA, Warwick recognized that his remarks were inappropriate for his role and has apologized. He is expected to return to his duties for the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.
George Russell, who secured pole position in qualifying, defended Warwick during a post-race press conference. “We’re all open to have our own views,” he said. “I think what Derek said didn’t offend anyone. He’s a volunteer, and anything more than this temporary suspension would have been a bit OTT.”
In contrast, the precedent set by Johnny Herbert, who was permanently removed from his stewarding role earlier this year for similar infractions, indicates a more stringent approach may be forthcoming.
This incident has again highlighted the delicate balance FIA stewards must maintain between their roles as officials and their personal opinions within the highly scrutinized environment of Formula 1.
