Sauber F1 Team Achieves Significant Milestone with Hulkenberg’s Fifth Place Finish at Spanish GP

In a remarkable showing, Nico Hulkenberg secured fifth place for the Sauber Formula 1 team at the recent Spanish Grand Prix, marking the team’s best finish since Valtteri Bottas’ fifth at Imola in 2022. Sauber’s performance comes as a welcome relief, particularly after a challenging start to the season.

The team introduced a comprehensive upgrade package at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which included a redesigned floor, modified engine cover, and enhanced front wing endplates. These changes aimed to boost competitiveness amidst a tightly contested midfield.

During the race, Hulkenberg progressed from a qualifying position of 16th, initially moving into ninth place following the retirement of Andrea Kimi Antonelli due to Mercedes engine issues. A late safety car period allowed Hulkenberg to capitalize further, overtaking both Isack Hadjar and Lewis Hamilton to finish in a commendable fifth, which was elevated after Max Verstappen received a time penalty.

Sauber’s Team Principal, Jonathan Wheatley, expressed his satisfaction with the results and the significant step forward in car performance. “We know what we’ve been capable of,” Wheatley stated. “The upgrade did what we expected, and the feedback from the drivers was consistent. It feels like a huge relief.”

Wheatley emphasized the importance of this breakthrough for the team’s strategic future, especially as they prepare for a transition to an Audi works program in 2026. “A tenth of a second makes a massive difference,” he added. The Barcelona upgrade positions Sauber to be a contender for points in future races, rather than merely spectating in the midfield battle.

Hulkenberg’s performance, highlighted by his overtaking move on Hamilton on the penultimate lap, drew particular praise from Wheatley, who remarked, “It was a bit of a pinch yourself moment because that was on pace.” This race illustrates Sauber’s renewed competitiveness and commitment to improving their standings in the Constructors’ Championship.
