Thailand Steps Closer to Hosting Formula 1 Race

Thailand is on track to secure its place on the Formula 1 calendar with the recent cabinet approval of a bid to host a Grand Prix in Bangkok starting in 2028. The government has allocated $1.2 billion for the initiative, signaling a serious commitment to bringing F1 to the nation.

Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong announced the funding during a press conference, highlighting the government’s intent to capitalize on the revenue opportunities associated with hosting an F1 event. Earlier this year, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali visited Bangkok, further solidifying intentions to explore the feasibility of a race. Thai driver Alex Albon of Williams has also engaged with officials, including discussions with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

“They’re taking it very seriously,” Albon remarked about the initiative. “They have a very strong product. If you see how serious they are… it looks good.”

Although a specific confirmation date for the race is pending, there is already a memorandum of understanding in place with F1. Experts have noted that accommodating Thailand on the already packed 24-race calendar may require adjustments, especially with some European events rotating in the coming years.

As preparations advance, Thailand aims to harness the global spotlight of F1, leveraging the potential for tourism and investment. The development stands as a key strategic initiative for Thailand, marrying motorsport with national economic ambitions. The implications for both the F1 calendar and the motorsports landscape in the region could be significant in the years to come.
