Mekies Takes the Helm at Red Bull Racing
Red Bull Racing has appointed Laurent Mekies as its new team principal and CEO, following the departure of Christian Horner after two decades in the role. Mekies, who previously served as the racing director for the sister team Racing Bulls, is expected to bring stability and leadership during a challenging transition.
Horner’s tenure included two dominant eras with drivers Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, but the team has experienced a recent decline in competitiveness. Mekies’ promotion comes amid speculation regarding Verstappen’s long-term future with the team.
Alan Permane, Racing Bulls’ team principal, expressed confidence in Mekies’ capabilities. "They’re getting a great guy, honestly," Permane said. "He’s a people person. He’s a racer. He knows racing but he’s exceptionally good with people," he added, emphasizing Mekies’ qualifications.
Mekies inherits a multifaceted role that includes overseeing the expanded Red Bull Powertrains division, which is developing in-house engines for the 2026 regulations. His previous experience at Racing Bulls positions him well to ensure continuity between the two squads.
"Red Bull is getting someone very good and very capable of leading them," Permane asserted. Mekies acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, "Huge boots to fill, but I’m fortunate to have a strong management team."
As both teams prepare for closer collaboration under the new engine regulations, Permane noted that existing synergies, particularly those developed between Mekies and Horner, will remain intact.
Mekies’ leadership will be pivotal as Red Bull Racing seeks to regain its competitive edge in the evolving landscape of Formula 1.
