Miami GP: Andrea Kimi Antonelli Makes F1 History with Sprint Pole
Miami, FL – Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli etched his name into the annals of Formula 1 history by securing pole position for the Miami sprint race, becoming the youngest driver to achieve this feat at just 18 years old.
Despite being unfamiliar with the Miami circuit, Antonelli showcased impressive skill and composure, outpacing McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. This performance comes after previously amassing 38 points in his debut season, alleviating early concerns regarding his promotion from the junior ranks.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff defended the decision to elevate Antonelli to a race seat for the upcoming 2025 season, despite skepticism within the sporting community. "Many voices suggested he should have a preparation year elsewhere," Wolff stated, emphasizing the team’s commitment to developing Antonelli internally. "We were willing to take that risk, even if it meant mistakes."
Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s growth within the team since he joined in 2019, stating, "Now, the speed he’s showing is incredible. He doesn’t even know the track yet, but this was the next big step." While acknowledging that challenges lie ahead, he expressed optimism about Antonelli’s performance trajectory.
Post-qualifying, Antonelli remained focused, urging the team to shift its attention to the main race: "Enough celebration. The work begins now to replicate this performance in qualifying and Sunday’s race."
As the Formula 1 season progresses, all eyes will be on Antonelli and Mercedes to see if they can maintain this momentum going into the full race weekend.
