FIA President’s Leadership Under Scrutiny: Wolff Advocates for Positive Changes
Date: October 3, 2023
Toto Wolff, Team Principal of Mercedes, acknowledged the firm leadership style of Mohammed Ben Sulayem since his presidency of the FIA began in late 2021. Wolff described this approach as "ruling with an iron fist," highlighting its role in enforcing important developments in Formula 1, particularly regarding a controversial ‘swearing ban’ and the introduction of an 11th F1 team.
While there has been tension between Wolff and Ben Sulayem regarding these issues, their relationship appears to have improved recently. Wolff noted the importance of drivers acting as role models, stating, “Kids need to learn not to insult others on the radio,” referencing the impact of driver behavior on younger audiences and aspiring racers.
The FIA’s swearing ban initially faced heavy criticism but was amended in April, which revised penalties. First-time offenders face reduced fines of €5,000, and exceptions for swearing in "uncontrolled environments," such as team radio communications, were introduced. Wolff expressed support for the ban, emphasizing its educational value, especially for non-English-speaking drivers who may misuse language learned in a competitive context.
On the matter of expanding the grid, Wolff’s position softened as Andretti’s bid gained support from Cadillac, marking a potential shift in F1 dynamics. “It’s good for the sport,” he remarked, acknowledging the value this partnership brings despite initial doubts about the team’s projected impact.
This narrative underscores a progressive dialogue within Formula 1 regarding professionalism and the future landscape of the sport as it adapts to modern audience expectations and the potential inclusion of new teams.
