Verstappen’s Remarkable Comeback Secures Podium at Sao Paulo Grand Prix
Max Verstappen delivered an impressive performance at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, finishing third after starting from the pit lane, as Red Bull faced unprecedented challenges during qualifying. Both Verstappen and teammate Sergio Pérez were eliminated in Q1 for the first time in 19 years, prompting a strategic overhaul that included the installation of a new power unit and changes to Verstappen’s suspension setup.
Despite a puncture early in the race, Verstappen showcased resilience and pace, progressing through the field on hard tires. After making a critical late pit stop for soft tires, he managed to overtake George Russell but ultimately finished 10 seconds behind race-winner Lando Norris and just behind Kimi Antonelli.
“The race was quite full on – a lot of action,” Verstappen remarked. “To be on the podium from the pit lane, I didn’t expect that at all – even with a puncture.”
The defending champion credited the team’s dedication to improvement and strategic execution, stating, “An incredible result for us. Very happy and proud of everyone within the team. Yesterday was tough for us, but we never give up.”
Analyzing his performance, Verstappen noted the impact of cooler track conditions on the car’s responsiveness. He reflected on the race strategy: “Overall, a super strong race… Coming from the pit lane to the podium – I think we did the right strategy at the end.”
Verstappen was clear about his mindset: “In the laps to the grid, it already felt better than the whole weekend. But after the start, when I picked up the puncture, it felt like nothing was going my way.”
The driver emphasized focusing on each lap rather than setting specific goals during the race. “You just settle in and try to do the best you can,” he said.
This race reinforces Red Bull’s adaptability and strengthens Verstappen’s position in the championship as he continues to push for landmark achievements this season.
