Canadian GP: Verstappen Optimistic Despite Second Practice Setback

Max Verstappen concluded Friday’s practice sessions at the Canadian Grand Prix with cautious optimism, even after a notable decline in performance from FP1 to FP2. The Red Bull driver topped the initial practice with a competitive pace but dropped to ninth in the second session at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Verstappen expressed confidence about the team’s prospects for the race, stating, "We’re looking okay for Sunday, provided we can get the car back to how it felt in FP1." He acknowledged difficulties in FP2, emphasizing the need to investigate balance issues that affected performance. “I think we lost something with the car that we need to work on," he noted, adding, "Overall, I think it was quite a positive day for us."

Historically, Verstappen has been strong in Montreal, having claimed victory in the last three Grands Prix. However, this year presents a different challenge as McLaren has overtaken Red Bull in the competitive hierarchy, leading the Constructors’ Championship with seven wins out of nine races, leaving Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes in a tight battle for second place, just 21 points apart.

In his reflections, Verstappen stated, "It’s a bit different this time around. I think if we can fight for a podium with Ferrari and Mercedes, that would be a good achievement." He acknowledged McLaren’s current superiority, saying, "The McLarens go faster. It’s not even in my head. I’m more focusing on the other teams."

As teams prepare for Saturday’s qualifying, Verstappen’s focus will be on clawing back performance to stay competitive in a tight championship race.
