Piastri Faces Challenges in Recent Races as Norris Shines
In a turbulent season marked by Max Verstappen’s resurgence in the championship standings, Oscar Piastri’s recent dip in performance has raised eyebrows. The Australian driver began the year strongly, securing a ninth-place finish in Melbourne followed by a collection of podiums and a victory. However, since his third-place finish at Monza, Piastri has struggled to replicate that success.
Piastri’s series of setbacks began in Azerbaijan with a first-lap retirement due to a jumped start. Although he showed signs of recovery in Singapore by outqualifying teammate Lando Norris, recent races in Austin and Mexico City have highlighted a growing disparity between the two drivers. In Austin, Piastri finished 22 seconds behind Norris, a stark contrast to their tighter performances a year prior.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella attributed Piastri’s difficulties to the car’s handling under low-grip conditions typical of both the Circuit of the Americas and the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. “We extracted important information on how the car needs to be driven in these special conditions,” Stella stated. He noted Piastri needed to adapt to a driving style that embraces sliding rather than gripping, a characteristic Norris seemed to handle more naturally.
Despite the current challenges, Stella emphasized Piastri’s potential for growth. “He’s handling the transition well, and we’ve identified several areas for improvement,” he said. Piastri himself acknowledged the adjustments needed in his approach, stating, “For the last 19 races, my driving style has worked pretty well, but now I must adapt.”
Norris’s dominant performance is a factor highlighted by Stella, who noted that low-grip conditions suit the Englishman’s driving style. “Lando showed convincing performances and capitalized on the car’s strengths,” he remarked.
As the championship battle intensifies, Piastri enters a break before the Brazilian GP at Interlagos. With a two-week respite, he aims to refine his techniques and regain his competitive edge. Last season at Brazil, he matched Norris’s pace. This year, Piastri must deliver again while contending with the pressures of the title race looming.
In conclusion, not only does Piastri face the urgency of improving, but the upcoming race will serve as a crucial stress test for his adaptability as he looks to halt the trend of difficulties in his performance.
