Tim Mayer Launches FIA Presidential Campaign Amid Controversy

Tim Mayer, a veteran in motorsport management and son of McLaren’s former leader Teddy Mayer, has declared his candidacy for the presidency of the FIA, coinciding with his dismissal from the organization’s stewards panel. Mayer, who previously served as chief operating officer of IMSA and worked closely with the Automobile Competition Committee for the United States, aims to improve governance within the FIA rather than seeking retribution.

Born in February 1966 in the UK to American parents, Mayer’s motorsport career began in 1992 as general business manager for Emerson Fittipaldi. He later established G3 Communications, focusing on international broadcasts for Champ Car races and occupying various managerial roles within the series.

Mayer’s appointment as a steward of high-profile events, including Formula 1 races, came alongside his consultancy work for US race sanctioning bodies. His dismissal in late 2022 was attributed to a perceived conflict of interest after he represented the US Grand Prix organizer in a review of penalties following a safety breach during the race.

Following his removal, Mayer criticized the FIA’s management approach, highlighting the use of a text message for such significant communication. “For a federation that relies on volunteers, to fire by text somebody who has made a significant contribution does not speak well of the management,” he stated.

As he campaigns for the FIA presidency ahead of the upcoming British Grand Prix, Mayer emphasizes a vision for increased transparency and reduced centralization of power. “It’s not about revenge,” Mayer asserted. “It’s about how we can drive the FIA forward.”

Mayer’s focus on reform resonates amid criticism of the current administration, positioning him as a contender to reshape the governance of motorsport’s governing body.
