Norris Secures First Pole of 2025 Season at Monaco Grand Prix
Lando Norris of McLaren achieved a pivotal pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix, clocking a new track record of 1:09.954 during Q3. This marked Norris’s first pole since the season opener in Australia and a significant turnaround after several disappointing qualifying performances.
Norris attributed his success to "driving smarter" rather than simply being faster. He emphasized the unique challenges posed by the Monaco layout, which demands higher risk and commitment than other tracks. "It’s a lot more risk and commitment rather than just absolute car balance," he explained, noting his improved driving style as a crucial factor.
During qualifying, McLaren opted for two runs on the final set of tires, a strategy that paid off as Norris improved his time on the second lap. His initial lap set a solid foundation, but his subsequent effort secured him the top spot, outpacing local favorite Charles Leclerc.
Norris, reflecting on his performance, stated, "Today was probably the first time since Australia that I’ve really put it all together." He conveyed that while he feels he has regained his pace, the Monaco pole is particularly meaningful due to recent struggles. “For me, it’s at least a step in the right direction, which I’m very happy about,” he concluded.
Despite this achievement, Norris was cautious in declaring a breakthrough, indicating that consistency in future races is essential for a true turnaround. He expressed a desire to replicate this performance in the upcoming races in Barcelona and Montreal, underscoring the need for ongoing improvement: “You need consistency of results to classify it as a breakthrough.”
