Red Bull F1 Names Laurent Mekies as New Team Principal
Red Bull Racing has appointed Laurent Mekies as its new team principal and CEO, succeeding Christian Horner, who led the team for two decades. The decision comes amid a decline in competitiveness for the team over the past 18 months, raising questions about the future of star driver Max Verstappen.
Mekies transitions from his role at Racing Bulls, where he worked closely with Alan Permane, who praised Mekies as an adept leader. "He’s a people person and a racer, exceptionally good with people," Permane stated. "Red Bull are getting someone very good and capable of leading them."
In addition to managing the team’s immediate challenges, Mekies inherits the responsibility of overseeing Red Bull Powertrains’ development as the team prepares for the 2026 engine regulations. Notably, Permane highlighted the strong management structure in place at both Red Bull and Racing Bulls, which will facilitate a seamless transition.
Mekies expressed confidence in the existing management team, acknowledging, "I’m very fortunate… they are just brilliant." As he integrates into his new role, Mekies is expected to maintain continuity while introducing his own ideas.
Technical collaboration between Racing Bulls and Red Bull is set to enhance performance efficiency, with both teams sharing components such as suspension and gearboxes.
In summary, Mekies’ leadership could be pivotal for Red Bull as it seeks to reclaim its competitive edge in Formula 1 amidst a challenging period.
