Red Bull Racing Implements Incremental Floor Update Ahead of Miami GP
Miami, FL – Red Bull Racing has commenced a phased update of its RB21, unveiling key modifications ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Following initial changes in Jeddah, the subsequent updates focus on the floor design, with additional adjustments scheduled for Imola.
The new Miami update features modified floor fences and edges, specifically designed to enhance airflow stability. Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan emphasized the low-risk nature of these updates, stating, “We’re trying to address two things: downforce and cornering balance. The updates are relatively stable and involve little risk.”
This strategic update comes during a sprint weekend, which Monaghan described as a suitable opportunity, despite the limited practice time. He reassured that the adjustments should not destabilize the car aerodynamically, potentially increasing downforce.
Historical challenges with the RB21’s balance were acknowledged, with Monaghan indicating ongoing efforts to refine the car’s performance: “Finding solutions is never simple. We are gradually improving step by step.”
Notably, only Max Verstappen will utilize the revised floor in Miami, while his teammate Yuki Tsunoda is expected to transition to the updated components in Imola.
Mercedes Makes Power Unit Switch
In tandem with Red Bull’s updates, Mercedes has introduced a new power unit for the Miami race, while Red Bull has reverted to an older engine unit at Honda’s request. This decision, common practice in Formula 1 to manage engine wear across circuits, has led to speculation regarding its impact on performance. Initial assessments from Helmut Marko suggest the new floor design has reduced understeer, though challenges remain in slow and medium-speed corners.
