Yuki Tsunoda Penalized 10 Places for Overtaking Under Red Flag Conditions at Canadian GP
Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull Racing has been dealt a significant setback ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, receiving a 10-place grid penalty for overtaking Oscar Piastri during a red flag situation in the third practice session at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This penalty places Tsunoda at the rear of the grid for Sunday’s race.
The incident occurred after Piastri sustained a puncture and suspension damage while tapping the "Wall of Champions." While Piastri was returning to the pits at a reduced speed of 86 km/h, Tsunoda overtook him at 171 km/h, prompting the stewards to act.
Tsunoda expressed frustration over the penalty, stating, "I’m not really sure I deserve that penalty because I don’t know what they want me to do…waiting for Oscar to pit behind the damaged car is just waiting for debris to hit me." He added, “Half the speed of the speed that we normally drive and I got a penalty. It’s ridiculous.”
In addition to the grid penalty, Tsunoda received two penalty points on his superlicence, further complicating his position as he continues to adapt to life at Red Bull following his promotion from the junior team during the Japanese GP in April. His current season has seen him earn just four points, and he will start Sunday’s race from P20 after qualifying 11th.
Reflecting on the situation, Tsunoda said: "It’s very frustrating… obviously it’s not good enough at all. But it’s not a P20 again. I don’t normally start like this… Time to make the position up."
Tsunoda faces an uphill battle in the race, where overtaking opportunities may be limited, particularly in light of his recent struggles in a highly competitive season.
