IMSA Confirms Record 61 Entries for 2024 Daytona 24 Hours
The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has announced a robust entry list for the upcoming 64th edition of the Daytona 24 Hours, scheduled for January 22-25, 2024. A total of 61 entries, divided among 11 GTP, 14 LMP2, 15 GTD Pro, and 21 GTD vehicles, reflects IMSA’s continued growth and stability as a premier racing series, marking the fifth consecutive year of maximum grid size.
IMSA President John Doonan indicated that interest remains high, with “close to 90” inquiries from teams looking to participate. “At one point, we were mid-to-upper 80s with teams wanting to come,” he noted in a recent media call.
Doonan elaborated on the selection process for entries, emphasizing priority for full-season entrants and those committed to the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup. “It starts with full-season entrants, then those with specific marketing plans and alignment with manufacturers,” he explained. He highlighted the importance of personal engagement, stating that IMSA staff held individual meetings with all entrants to understand their marketing strategies and driver lineups.
Discussions with Daytona International Speedway are ongoing to maximize the grid for the prestigious event. “We’re trying to ensure the quality of the show while maximizing participation,” Doonan said. Since 2020, IMSA has successfully increased grid size from 39 entries to a consistent 61, a testament to the series’ health and competitiveness.
The addition of Genesis to the GTP class in 2027, as well as further manufacturer discussions, suggests a promising future for IMSA racing.
“It’s about maintaining our momentum while ensuring the quality of our sport remains intact,” Doonan concluded. The Daytona 24 Hours is positioned to showcase this growth, solidifying IMSA’s status in the motorsports landscape.
