IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge Expands with BMW M2 Challenge in 2026
The IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge is set to introduce a new class in 2026, as the BMW M2 Challenge will join the series’ endurance rounds. This addition will integrate a one-make category alongside next-generation LMP3 prototypes, GT3 cars from the GTDX class, and GT4 (GSX) entrants during four endurance events.
The races will take place at four prominent venues: Sebring International Raceway (March 6-8), Circuit of The Americas (May 7-9), VIRginia International Raceway (June 19-21), and Road America (August 14-16). This multi-class environment aims to provide entry-level drivers with valuable racing experience, particularly in scenarios involving faster prototypes.
IMSA President John Doonan previously hinted at these developments during the Oct. 22 episode of the IMSA Endurance Hour podcast, expressing enthusiasm for the collaborative opportunities the M2 Challenge will present. “It’s a single-make car, but to put that car into a multi-class environment is great for entry-level racing,” he stated.
The BMW M2 Racing, set to debut in 2026, is built on the BMW 2-Series coupé, featuring an inline four-cylinder engine that delivers 313 horsepower, with a top speed of 167 mph. Priced at approximately €98,000 (over $111,000), it will also be eligible for various competitive events including the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the SRO TC America series.
Adam McGregor, Customer and Racing Manager for BMW of North America, highlighted the importance of the M2 Racing in making high-performance racing accessible: “The BMW M2 Racing is set to redefine the entry-level segment, offering racing teams a car that is both affordable and uncompromising in performance.”
Teams participating in the VP Challenge endurance races will be allowed to enter two drivers per vehicle, with at least one FIA Bronze or Silver-rated driver, prohibiting Platinum-rated drivers from competing in this class.
