Lamborghini Names Maurizio Leschiutta as New Motorsport Chief

Lamborghini has appointed Maurizio Leschiutta as its new Head of Motorsport, following his tenure at BMW where he led the M Hybrid V8 LMDh program. Leschiutta assumes this role to oversee Lamborghini’s LMDh prototype, GT3, and one-make motorsport operations within its Squadra Corse department.

This appointment comes nearly ten months after Giorgio Sanna’s departure last March. Leschiutta will report directly to Chief Technology Officer Rouven Mohr, who managed the motorsport division during the interim.

Leschiutta expressed enthusiasm about his new position, stating, “I hope I can contribute a small paragraph in one of the many pages of its history books, and I am confident that, together, we shall rise to the challenges in the years to come.” Mohr welcomed Leschiutta, highlighting his vast experience in the motorsport sector.

With an extensive background, Leschiutta’s career includes 11 years at Ferrari’s engine department, contributing to race operations for notable drivers and later moving to Maserati for its successful MC12 GT1 program. Most recently, he played a pivotal role in BMW M Motorsport, culminating in a leadership position for the M Hybrid V8 project.

Lamborghini’s shift in strategy coincides with a scaling back of its LMDh program, having confirmed the withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship (WEC) by 2025. The Italian manufacturer will enter a single GTP class car in the IMSA Endurance Cup after citing limitations in resources due to the WEC’s requirement for double entries in the Hypercar class.

Furthermore, Lamborghini confirmed that the SC63 LMDh will compete as a Squadra Corse entry for the first time, marking a separation from the Iron Lynx team that previously fielded the car. The car’s driver lineup for the Daytona 24 Hours includes Romain Grosjean, Daniil Kvyat, Mirko Bortolotti, and Edoardo Mortara.

In development news, Lamborghini plans to test its new GT3 contender derived from the recently launched Temerario road car this year, with the model expected to reach customers in 2026. This vehicle is being developed in collaboration with Podium Advanced Technologies. The Super Trofeo version of this model is scheduled for launch in 2027.

As Lamborghini positions itself for the upcoming competition season, the strategic leadership of Leschiutta signals a pivotal moment for the brand, aiming to solidify its presence in the global motorsport landscape.
