Michelin is set to launch a new line of slick tyres for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA SportsCar Championship, engineered with 50% sustainable materials, reflecting a substantial increase from previous models which featured 30% sustainable components. This initiative not only exceeds the initial target of 40% but also aligns with Michelin’s long-term goal of developing tyres composed of 100% sustainable materials by 2050.

The new Pilot Sport Endurance tyres will debut in 2026, coinciding with the lead-up to the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours, where extensive testing is scheduled this weekend. Michelin plans to produce 30,000 units annually, marking a significant shift from the limited quantities seen in other series like MotoE and Mission H24.

“Motorsport serves as a laboratory for technological advancements,” stated Matthieu Bonardel, Michelin’s motorsport boss. “This overhaul of our endurance range emphasizes performance while incorporating significant renewable materials.”

The new slicks will feature three specifications: soft, medium, and hard. Michelin aims to match the existing tyres’ one-lap performance while improving warm-up and durability, particularly following the recent ban on tyre warmers. Additionally, changes in tyre allocation for race events may be explored for 2027, contingent on regulatory adjustments.

Philippe Tramond, Michelin’s motorsport technical director, highlighted the new materials, stating that the development phase involved testing 11 renewable and recycled materials, with seven ultimately selected. The concluding test at Watkins Glen later this month will finalize specifications before production begins in September.

A new wet-weather tyre is also under development, although a release date remains uncertain. Each tyre’s distinct "micro velvet effect" aims to visually represent the advanced materials used.

Michelin’s supply agreement for the WEC’s Hypercar class extends through the 2029 season, with potential rule extensions expected during Le Mans week.
