Acura Meyer Shank Racing Claims Victory at Chevrolet Sports Car Classic
Detroit, MI – In a thrilling conclusion to the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic, Acura Meyer Shank Racing secured their first IMSA win since returning from a one-year hiatus. Renger van der Zande and Nick Yelloly, starting from pole position in the No. 93 Acura ARX-06, executed a late-race overtaking maneuver on Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing’s Ricky Taylor, clinching the victory by a margin of 0.947 seconds.
This win marks the first for van der Zande and Yelloly with their new team, highlighting a significant turnaround since the team’s previous sabbatical. Taylor and co-driver Filipe Albuquerque finished in second place with the No. 10 Cadillac V-Series.R, marking Cadillac Racing’s inaugural podium in both IMSA and WEC events.
Porsche Penske Motorsport’s dominant streak in GTP racing ended, as they recorded solid top-five finishes. The No. 6 Porsche 963, driven by Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell, finished third, while the championship-leading No. 7 Porsche, driven by Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr, secured fourth. The top five was rounded out by the No. 24 Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 of Dries Vanthoor and Philipp Eng.
During the race, Yelloly maintained a commanding lead in the early laps, while Tandy executed a notable climb through the field, eventually running fourth after an efficient series of pit stops. As the race approached its final stages, a collision among GTD PRO entries bunched the field, setting up a dramatic restart.
With less than five minutes remaining, van der Zande secured the lead from Taylor, solidifying their victory. Following the race, Nasr and Tandy retained a 70-point advantage in the GTP Drivers’ Championship over Jaminet and Campbell, with Porsche now focusing on the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the GTD PRO class, the No. 64 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Mustang GT3, driven by Sebastian Priaulx and Mike Rockenfeller, triumphed over the competition, securing their second win of the season. Despite starting from eighth, Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims of the No. 3 Pratt Miller Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R mounted a strong challenge, finishing second with a slim margin ahead of Andrea Caldarelli and Marco Mapelli from the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan GT3.
Following a late-race incident that impacted several competitors, the No. 77 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R and the No. 4 Pratt Miller Corvette were demoted to fifth and sixth places, respectively. Heinrich and Bachler continue to lead the GTD PRO standings, now only 31 points ahead of Sims and Garcia.
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will continue on June 22 at the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, the third event of the 2025 Michelin Endurance Cup.
