Team Penske Drivers Test Porsche 963 Ahead of Rolex 24
Team Penske IndyCar drivers Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden returned to the track this week, testing the Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 at Daytona for the first time since the February IMSA sanctioned test at Sebring. While the implications for their participation in the upcoming 2026 Rolex 24 At Daytona remain unofficial, both drivers aimed to impress for a potential drive in one of Porsche’s two factory prototypes.
Newgarden, who won the Rolex 24 in 2024, expressed excitement about the historical significance of the event: “It’s a good race to set yourself up for hopefully a great season,” he stated. He completed 43 laps and posted a best time of 1m36.526s, noting improvements in the car’s performance. “It feels better than last time I was in it,” he said, highlighting the positive development steps taken since his last test.
On the new Michelin Hypercar tire compounds, Newgarden remarked, “This one feels more stable… more forgiving.” His experience underscores the enhanced performance expected as the team gears up for the Rolex 24.
McLaughlin, seeking a first outing in a premier class car at the Rolex 24 after previous years in lower categories, logged 50 laps with a best time of 1m36.589s, just a fraction of a second behind Newgarden. “It’s just a great start to the year,” he remarked, emphasizing the competitive spirit of the race.
Reflecting on his previous endurance stint, McLaughlin remains open to future opportunities, stating, “I love just driving. Any race I can do, any shape or form… I want to do it.” As both drivers prepare for the season ahead, their performances at Daytona will be closely watched as they seek to solidify their positions within Porsche’s endurance racing program.
