Watkins Glen Qualifying Recap: Renger van der Zande Claims Pole Position for Sahlen’s Six Hours

Renger van der Zande of Acura Meyer Shank Racing secured pole position for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International, clocking a record-setting time of 1:31.558, his first IMSA pole since the 2018 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Following the qualifying session, van der Zande expressed surprise at achieving a GTP course record, stating, "I didn’t expect a 31; I was expecting a 33." He attributed his success to rapid tire performance in the sweltering conditions. "The Michelin tires were coming in very quickly… I took it a bit easy on my fastest lap, and I kind of nailed Turn 1," he explained.

However, the anticipated extreme heat poses challenges for tire management during the race. "The heat is not particularly good for us. I know the Cadillac (V-Series.R) inside and out, and I think that one is a bit better on the tires than we are with the Acura," van der Zande stated, emphasizing the importance of preserving tire life throughout the race.

The No. 93 Acura’s setup will also involve endurance driver Kakunoshin Ohta, who is poised to take over early in the race to build physical endurance amidst the high temperatures. "Getting a stint out of the way is something that really helps for our physical endurance," van der Zande remarked. Ohta’s contributions will be crucial as the team aims for a strong performance in challenging conditions.

As the race approaches, all eyes will be on how well teams manage their tire strategy in the heat, making for an intense battle on the track.
