Dixon and Rahal Face Grid Penalties at Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal will each incur six-position grid penalties ahead of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, following a revealing qualifying session on Saturday.
Dixon’s penalty stems from a violation of Rule 16.1.2.3.2, which pertains to engine usage. His No. 9 Honda underwent an unauthorized engine change, as it was his fifth engine of the season without meeting the criteria for earning Manufacturer points, effectively designating it an unapproved change-out.
Similarly, Rahal’s No. 15 Honda was penalized due to a breach of Rule 16.1.5.4. This rule mandates that once an engine designed for the Indianapolis 500 is fitted to a car, its removal prior to the race constitutes an unapproved engine change, barring replacement for repair purposes.
Both drivers will look to navigate challenging grid positions as they prepare for the race, with competitive implications for their respective teams.
