Colton Herta Eyes Move to Formula 2 for Super License Points Ahead of F1 Aspirations
IndyCar driver Colton Herta may be considering a transition to Formula 2 by 2026 to accumulate the necessary FIA Super License points for a future Formula 1 seat, according to sources from RACER.
Currently competing with Andretti Autosport, Herta’s prospects for a F1 seat with Cadillac were hindered due to insufficient Super License points. If Kyle Kirkwood participates in the upcoming Nashville race, Herta could finish no higher than sixth in the IndyCar standings, securing only 37 of the required 40 points. The risk of dropping below the top 10 in the championship would further complicate his bid, potentially leaving him with a three-year total of just 31 points.
Formula 2 presents an attractive pathway, offering 40 Super License points to the top three championship finishers and significant points to the top six. Competing in F2 would also afford Herta the opportunity to race alongside F1 events at 14 of this season’s 24 Grand Prix venues, providing valuable exposure to high-degradation Pirelli tires.
Herta has previous European racing experience from 2015 and 2016, though he has never participated in the F1 feeder series, which includes both F2 and F3. With Cadillac set to launch its F1 campaign with established drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, a stint in F2 could facilitate Herta’s growth and position within the team, should he secure the necessary Super License.
Reports indicate that several F2 teams have been approached regarding Herta’s future, although no formal agreements have yet been reached. Additionally, Andretti would need to find a replacement for Herta in IndyCar, with Will Power reportedly among the candidates.
The potential move aligns with TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss’s recent statements emphasizing the importance of creating pathways for American drivers to enter F1. While he initially dismissed direct inquiries about placing Herta in F2, the ongoing discussions suggest a strategic approach to Herta’s racing future.
