Barber Motorsports Park Practice Report: Tire Insights Ahead of Race Day
With significant rain expected on Saturday, Friday’s practice session at Barber Motorsports Park proved to be critical for teams to evaluate Firestone’s primary and alternate tires in preparation for the 90-lap race on Sunday.
According to Firestone’s pre-event analysis, the softer alternate tire remains consistent with the 2024 specifications, while the new primary compound is designed for enhanced longevity. Feedback from drivers during practice highlighted differing experiences with tire performance, particularly in comparison to the season’s opening races.
Colton Herta of Andretti Global, who finished third in practice, noted, “It seems pretty normal to me. The red (alternate) tires haven’t changed, but the black (primary) tires have. I expect the racing to be similar to last year as far as tire strategy.”
Conversely, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou, who secured second place in practice, expressed a more critical perspective on the primary tires. “The primaries are not great in terms of grip. They don’t seem to last more, and they have less grip,” said Palou, emphasizing the speed advantage of the alternates. “The alternates, you have a big peak and they seem to hold on, which is inspiring.”
Despite an additional 100 pounds of weight in the cars due to hybrid regulations, Palou found the vehicle’s handling manageable. “I expected it to be worse. It feels a bit boggy or lazy in some corners, but it’s not terrible.”
As teams finalize their strategies ahead of a potentially wet race, the insights gained during this practice session could prove invaluable for tire management and overall performance.
