O’Ward Comments on Herta’s Transition to Formula 2 as Precursor to Potential F1 Seat with Cadillac
In light of Colton Herta’s recent departure from IndyCar to pursue a career in Formula 2, Pato O’Ward has expressed insights into Herta’s motivations and future prospects. O’Ward believes that Herta’s decision to race in F2 is strategically linked to an anticipated Formula 1 seat with Cadillac for the 2027 season.
Herta has taken on a test driver role with Cadillac, which is set to enter Formula 1 in 2026 through a collaboration with TWG Motorsports and General Motors. Concurrently, he will compete in F2 with Hitech, aiming to accumulate the necessary Super License points for F1 eligibility.
O’Ward remarked, “He’s very talented… I’d be shocked to not see him in a Formula 1 [seat] in 2027. I don’t think he’d be doing this switch if that wasn’t on the table for him.” He further emphasized the significance of Herta’s performance, stating, “We want him to make it to Formula 1, and we want him to do well.”
Herta’s transition to F2 is expected to enhance his familiarity with various Grand Prix circuits and Pirelli tires; however, O’Ward cautioned that the difference in vehicle performance will be substantial. “The task is tall. The tires are very different. The car is much worse than an Indy car… I really hope he’s doing it because he has a Formula 1 seat,” he added.
Herta’s first opportunity to drive F2 machinery is anticipated during the end-of-season test in Abu Dhabi, unless he is substituted in at upcoming rounds in Qatar or Abu Dhabi. Hitech is currently fielding drivers Luke Browning and Dino Beganovic, both of whom are performing well in the championship.
This new chapter in Herta’s career not only marks a pivotal transition but also positions him as a key figure for American motorsport representation in Formula 1.
