Lochie Hughes Sets Sights on IndyCar After Successful Test with Andretti Global
In a crucial test for his racing career, Lochie Hughes, the 23-year-old Australian driver, completed a full day with Andretti Global, piloting the No. 98 Dallara DW12-Honda Indy car. This session marked Hughes’ first experience with IndyCar machinery and provided a clear roadmap for his physical and technical development as he aims for a race seat by 2027.
Hughes, who recently clinched the USF Pro 2000 title, previously excelled in the Indy NXT series, winning two races and securing third place in the standings. However, adapting to the heavier and faster IndyCar introduced new physical challenges. The DW12 demands significant strength to manage its 5,000 pounds of downforce without power steering, a stark contrast to Hughes’ previous experience in the lighter NXT car.
“Running through various setup items was tough physically. I was trying to hang on the whole time,” Hughes remarked after completing approximately 100 laps. “The weight affects the car’s handling, and finding lap time is different. I definitely need to put on some muscle, as I struggled towards the end of the session, even when I felt most comfortable with the car.”
Hughes logged the fifth-fastest time out of seven drivers, securing second place among IndyCar testing debutants, just behind Mick Schumacher. This experience has prompted Hughes to prioritize his physical conditioning as he prepares for the upcoming Indy NXT season, where he aims to replicate his championship success.
“This is what I will be doing,” Hughes stated confidently about his goal of becoming an IndyCar driver. “Winning the NXT championship next year is job number one.”
With a focused plan for improvement and unwavering determination, Hughes is poised to make a significant impact in the motorsports landscape in the years to come.
