IndyCar Series: Navigating Heat at XPEL Grand Prix

Elkhart Lake, WI — Under sweltering conditions at the XPEL Grand Prix, winner Alex Palou and his fellow IndyCar drivers utilized cool-shirt systems to combat the oppressive 96-degree heat at Road America. However, pit crews faced significant challenges, encumbered by thick, multi-layer fireproof suits that exacerbated the already taxing environment.

In the paddock, team personnel shared insights on hydration strategies pivotal to maintaining performance. Rinus VeeKay’s chief mechanic, Renato Laporte, emphasized the necessity of pre-race precautions. "I drink a lot of water, but I don’t eat before," he noted, adding that a cold towel around the neck was a helpful cooling measure. VeeKay himself took a cold plunge before the race, stating, "It’s 45 degrees for 10 minutes. It really helps and brings your core down."

Hydration was a central focus for all teams, with electrolytes becoming a staple in pre-race routines. Will Power’s crew chief, Matt Jonsson, confirmed the strategy: "You do a lot of water… and then Pedialyte popsicles."

In response to the extreme temperatures, IndyCar allowed teams to use pop-up tents for shade, a decision well-received on pit row. Jonsson remarked, "That was very good and helpful," revealing the team’s use of swamp coolers for added comfort.

Felix Rosenqvist’s chief mechanic, Jimmy Looper, noted their systematic approach to hydration, emphasizing the importance of training in heat. "We sent out an email at the start of the week to everyone to be sure to hydrate… Pre-hydrating and replenishing salts is crucial," he stated.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s team manager, Blair Julian, conveyed a collective effort to manage heat stress among crew members. "It’s about ensuring they’re not drinking just sodas… the buddy system is essential for monitoring hydration," he explained.

As competitors navigated the heat, teamwork and preparation were paramount, ensuring that both drivers and crews remained focused on performance under challenging conditions.
