Iowa Speedway’s Future Uncertain Following 2025 Doubleheader
Penske Entertainment’s Vice President Michael Montri has indicated that no immediate decisions have been made regarding Iowa Speedway’s status on the NTT IndyCar Series schedule. This uncertainty follows a doubleheader event last weekend, which showcased improved racing dynamics compared to previous years.
While on-track action saw drivers engaging in competitive side-by-side racing—an upgrade from the single-file format witnessed in 2024—the attendance figures were concerning. The absence of promotional partner Hy-Vee, a key player in past events, resulted in noticeably empty grandstands, raising questions about the viability of Iowa as a future venue. Pato O’Ward and Alex Palou secured victories during the event, yet the lack of fan engagement was alarming.
Montri acknowledged the shift in the event’s focus this year, stating, “This year was definitely a reset for us… focusing more on the on-track product. I thought the on-track product was better than last year.” He noted that audience metrics reflected a more race-driven fan base, diverging from the more entertainment-focused crowd of previous years.
The decision on Iowa Speedway’s future will be informed by the upcoming 2026 IndyCar calendar. Montri emphasized that scheduling involves multiple factors, including successful models from other venues, such as moving the St. Louis race to a night format. He underscored the collaborative nature of scheduling decisions, which often depend on a variety of logistical elements.
As discussions on the 2026 schedule continue, Montri expressed gratitude to Sukup, this year’s local sponsor, for their support amid the challenges faced during the event’s restructuring. The ultimate fate of Iowa Speedway as an IndyCar venue remains to be determined in the coming months.
