Mid-Ohio GP: Palou’s Late Error Costs Potential Victory

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 9, 2023 – Alex Palou showcased impressive form throughout the season, achieving three pole positions and six race wins prior to Sunday. However, a critical mistake with just five laps remaining cost him a likely seventh victory in the 2023 IndyCar season.

Leading comfortably by four seconds over Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon, Palou lost control of his car, sliding off the track after a momentary lapse in concentration. "Big mistake, man," he acknowledged post-race. "Nothing in particular happened—just lost it a little bit, got into the marbles, and went out."

Despite the disappointing finish, Palou’s performance earned him valuable points. He secured a second-place finish, along with three bonus points for pole position, leading a total of 75 laps of the 90-lap race. This result extends his championship lead significantly, with a cushion of over two full races ahead of closest competitors.

"Overall, if you sum up the weekend—leading 75 laps, getting the pole, running really fast—it’s been amazing," Palou reflected. Seven races remain, and he could afford to skip the upcoming doubleheader at Iowa Speedway and still retain his lead when he returns at Toronto.

Despite the setback, Palou remains optimistic about his championship campaign, underscoring his team’s strong strategy and car performance. The focus now shifts as the championship heats up, with Palou positioned favorably for the remainder of the season.
