Newgarden Involved in Dramatic Crash at Bommarito Automotive Group 500

In a shocking turn of events at the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, Josef Newgarden lost his commanding lead and ultimately retired from the race after a collision with Louis Foster’s out-of-control car. Newgarden was leading comfortably when Foster spun and crashed into his path as they approached the front straight.

Newgarden attempted to avoid the incident by steering toward the pit wall; however, he could not evade Foster, who slid backwards into him. The impact sent Newgarden’s No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet into a dangerous trajectory, launching the car nose-first over Foster’s vehicle before it flipped and skidded along the track, ultimately coming to rest at the start-finish line.

The AMR Safety Team responded promptly, overturning Newgarden’s vehicle. Both drivers were subsequently checked by IndyCar Medical; Newgarden was able to walk away from the crash, while Foster required additional time to exit his car.

Reflecting on the incident, Foster attributed his crash to tire management issues. “I think one, maybe two laps too long trying the high line… I had a wiggle and then I just go into the marbles and was a complete passenger,” he explained. He expressed relief that both he and Newgarden emerged unscathed from the incident.

The crash resulted in Newgarden finishing 25th, losing a potential victory and extending his winless streak for the season, while Foster was classified 26th. Newgarden was leading by five seconds prior to the wreck, eyeing his first win of the year and a sixth victory at World Wide Technology Raceway.
