O’Ward Praises Indianapolis Motor Speedway Repaving Amid Tire Testing

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Arrow McLaren driver Pato O’Ward concluded a productive tire testing session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday, highlighting the recent repaving work and expressing his preference for a specific tire compound ahead of the 2024 Indianapolis 500.

“The track surface was good; no issues there whatsoever,” O’Ward stated after completing laps in the No. 5 Chevrolet. He detailed testing with the series’ control tire from last season and three alternative compounds, identifying one that performed significantly better across various metrics. “It was definitely way better in every single way—more balanced throughout the stint, less vibrations, and just a better tire overall.”

Joining O’Ward was reigning Indy 500 champion Alex Palou, who piloted the No. 10 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. Teammates Alexander Rossi from Ed Carpenter Racing and Takuma Sato from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing focused on brake and damper testing, with tire evaluations concluding before noon.

O’Ward emphasized the importance of tire stability under the current hybrid regulations, noting, “The rear weight from the hybrid system can overpower the balance. With this tire, the front axle was able to breathe a little bit, improving overall balance.” He acknowledged the lack of group testing, which limited observations on tire degradation during drafting.

This session is crucial as teams refine setups ahead of the 2024 season. O’Ward’s insights suggest a promising direction for tire development, one that maintains stability amidst evolving vehicle dynamics.
