PREMA Racing Faces Penalties Following Indianapolis 500 Incident

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Following the Indianapolis 500, PREMA Racing’s No. 90 Chevy, driven by Callum Ilott, faced significant penalties after a post-race technical inspection revealed violations. The left-front wing’s end plate was found to be improperly positioned, resulting in Ilott’s finishing position dropping from 12th to 33rd, alongside a $100,000 fine for the team. As a consequence, the competition manager has been suspended for the upcoming race in Detroit.

CEO Piers Phillips expressed disappointment but acknowledged the series’ commitment to consistency in enforcing regulations. “Our car passed tech and went into the race,” Phillips stated. “After a pit stop, we don’t know if a crew member inadvertently moved the end plate or if it was an existing issue. When the car returned for inspection post-race, the end plate was deemed too low.”

In a parallel situation, Andretti Global received identical penalties related to modifications on their carbon fiber suspension A-arm covers, which IndyCar assessed provided an aerodynamic advantage due to improper suspension mounting.

Both teams are facing scrutiny, and according to sources, the extended response timeline from IndyCar correlates with Andretti’s appeal process.

Despite the setbacks, Phillips commended the team’s resilience in light of their recent challenges, including a crash involving polesitter Robert Shwartzman that injured several crew members. He remarked on the solidarity demonstrated within the team amidst adversity.

Shwartzman commented post-race, “As I came into the box, both my front tires locked up and the car went into the wall.” Fortunately, crew members’ injuries were described as manageable, though one team member is dealing with broken bones.

Regarding the team’s financial health, Phillips dismissed recent speculation, asserting, “Absolutely nothing’s changed. It’s head down and we’re ready for the rest of the season.” PREMA Racing is focused on regrouping and preparing for upcoming races.
