Santino Ferrucci Secures Emotional Podium Finish at XPEL Grand Prix
Elkhart Lake, WI – Santino Ferrucci delivered a notable performance at the XPEL Grand Prix on Sunday, clinching a podium finish with a strategic fuel-saving strategy in honor of Marlene Sexton, who passed away earlier this month. Driving the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing car adorned with a special tribute livery, Ferrucci raced to a third-place finish after starting from 18th.
"All I could think about was, ‘We’re doing this for Marlene,’" Ferrucci stated in a post-race interview with FOX Sports.
The race, marked by unusual heat and multiple early cautions, allowed Ferrucci to employ an aggressive tire strategy. He switched to softer alternate tires during the third caution on lap 24, mirroring the tactics of race winner Alex Palou. The tactical switches paid off as Ferrucci skillfully maneuvered through the field, capitalizing on the fuel strategies of competitors like Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi, who were forced to make late pit stops.
Ferrucci experienced added pressure in the closing laps as he focused on conserving fuel. “They were counting down the laps, and I told Mike, ‘I’ve gotta focus, because this is getting stressful,’” Ferrucci remarked, crediting his crew for their efficient pit work despite a stall during one of the stops.
Crossing the finish line with just enough fuel, Ferrucci celebrated by requesting drinks from the grandstand, catching a beer from a fan in a triumphant gesture.
After the race, he dedicated his finish to Sexton, saying, "This one goes to Marlene. She was riding with us today. I’m very proud. This one tastes a little bit sweeter."
This result marks Ferrucci’s fourth consecutive top-five finish, showcasing a significant turnaround for the A.J. Foyt Racing team. After a challenging start to the season with an average finish of 15.4 in the first five races, this streak includes two podium finishes, revitalizing the team’s confidence.
“We’re back to where we were at the end of last year. I’ve gotta get my qualifying performance up, but until then I like padding my points for passing,” he added, indicating his focus on further improving his form as the season progresses.
Ferrucci’s performance at the XPEL Grand Prix not only highlights his racing acumen but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to a significant figure in his life.
