Race Report: WWTR IndyCar Series Incident Overshadows Sunday Event

In a dramatic twist during Sunday’s IndyCar event at World Wide Technology Raceway, race leader Josef Newgarden’s bid for victory was abruptly halted due to a crash involving rookie Louis Foster. The incident occurred on lap 131 when Foster’s No. 45 car, struggling in dirty air behind Santino Ferrucci, washed up into the outside wall. Unable to regain control, Foster’s vehicle spun and collided with Newgarden’s No. 2 Chevrolet on the front stretch.

The contact sent Newgarden’s car airborne, landing upside down against the inside wall before skidding to a halt at the start-finish line. Both drivers were swiftly attended to by the AMR Safety Team and emerged from their cars unharmed. Foster later addressed the crash, stating, “I just got a bit too high onto the dark stuff… I just couldn’t stop the car from spinning there. Obviously a pretty scary impact for both myself and Josef. Glad he’s okay.”

Newgarden and Foster’s crashes marked their respective third and second DNFs of the season, with Newgarden finishing 25th and Foster in 26th. The race continued without a red flag, allowing the field to negotiate debris as SAFER Barrier repairs were conducted.

Will Power also faced misfortune, being eliminated in an early incident. The race witnessed a significant lull, with pit road reopening on lap 142, and green flag conditions not returning until lap 150, over 20 minutes post-caution.

Both drivers entered the race positioned 14th and 24th in the standings, reflecting a challenging season thus far. Foster’s troubles were compounded by a previous incident in Detroit, where he experienced a severe crash with Felix Rosenqvist.

As the IndyCar series continues, the focus will remain on both drivers’ recoveries and the implications of these incidents on their championship campaigns.
