Power Earns Pole Position for Bommarito Automotive Group 500

Will Power secured pole position for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 with a qualifying time of 49.9088 seconds, averaging 180.329 mph over two laps. This marks Power’s fifth pole at Gateway Motorsports Park and his 71st career pole in IndyCar, further extending his record in the series. The two-time champion last topped qualifying charts in August 2024 at Portland International Raceway.

“We’ve been working hard, and I knew I had to send it,” Power commented on his qualifying strategy. “I was close to going flat in turns 3 and 4—excited for the Verizon 12 car. Chevy provided great power. Let’s hope we can execute in the race for a win.”

Power’s success placed him alongside teammate Scott McLaughlin, who qualified second, just 0.1515 seconds behind. Joseph Newgarden, who topped early practice sessions, rounded out the top five.

Qualifying results highlighted a strong day for Chevrolet, aiming to secure their first victory of the season amidst a Honda sweep led by Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood. The bowtie brand filled the top five spots, with Pato O’Ward and David Malukas completing the group.

Meyer Shank Racing’s Marcus Armstrong stood out as the fastest Honda driver in sixth place, followed closely by teammates Felix Rosenqvist and Colton Herta. Christian Lundgaard, a championship contender, qualified 14th, missing an opportunity to capitalize on Palou’s subpar qualifying performance.

Rookie Robert Shwartzman, who impressed earlier at the Indianapolis 500, struggled to replicate that success, finishing 24th after a minor misstep during his run.

Track conditions were impacted by a brief rain delay that forced a two-hour postponement before qualifying. Cooler air temperatures seemed to benefit drivers who qualified later in the session.

The final practice session is scheduled for 8:15 PM ET, with the race to be broadcast live on FOX at 8:00 PM ET.
