However, as any rider knows, numbers and specs alone don’t make a race-ready machine. After putting the new model through its paces, there’s a notable distinction: while the chassis and suspension improvements have undoubtedly elevated the bike’s handling and stability, the engine seems to have lost some of its characteristic low-end snap and torque feel. For someone like me—an enthusiastic parent with a son competing in the fiercely competitive 250B and 450B classes—the engine’s perceived shortcomings could mean the difference between a stellar start and trailing behind the pack of adrenaline-fueled competitors.
Seeking Solutions: The Twisted Development Approach
In search of a remedy to this perceived power deficit, I decided to team up with Jamie Ellis of Twisted Development—a name synonymous with performance tuning in the motocross community. As a parent, my goal was not to create a ticking time bomb of a bike, but rather to give my son a competitive edge without compromising reliability. The road to getting power where it counts can be complex, especially for amateur racers, but given the competitive nature of the field with dozens of eager youngsters—each weighing between 120-140 pounds and ready to unleash their raw energy—I knew I needed to explore tuning options. Fortunately, Jamie and I embarked on this journey with an open mind, willing to discover what modifications could enhance the KX250 while maintaining its dependability.
The Build Breakdown: What’s Under the Hood
The collaboration resulted in a detailed overhaul of the KX250’s engine components and overall setup. At the heart of this build is a custom high-compression (HC) piston that enhances combustion efficiency, paired with a meticulously ported and polished cylinder head, all designed to optimize airflow and power delivery. Additionally, we installed a custom low-end camshaft that aims to restore some of that low-end torque that had been noticeably absent. To further fine-tune the power characteristics, the transmission received a REM finish polish and tumble—a process that not only reduces friction but also enhances shifting smoothness.
Fine-Tuning and Comprehensive Upgrades
The tuning didn’t stop at the engine. The Vortex ECU was also tuned to ensure that the new components worked harmoniously together, paving the way for a smoother and more responsive ride. Beyond the motor, performance enhancements continued with the installation of a Ti-6 Pro Muffler System, which not only improves exhaust flow but also provides a pleasing sound that matches its aggressive aesthetics. Each component was selected with purpose, from the 839 Fatbar handlebars to the half waffle soft grips that ensure a comfortable and controlled grip. With the addition of a new sprocket setup—a 51-tooth rear and 13-tooth front setup—the gearing was adjusted to better match the engine characteristics post-tuning.
Suspension: A Balancing Act
Recognizing that power isn’t everything, we turned our attention to the bike’s suspension. The legendary RE Suspension worked their magic with a complete re-spring and re-valve process for both the forks and the shock, ensuring that the KX250 could handle the rigors of the track with precision and stability. To top it off, we equipped the bike with a complete six-spring clutch kit from Hinson Racing and a Pro Launch Start Device that helps deliver optimal power right off the line. Every detail was considered to ensure that the bike could perform at its best, allowing for quick starts and tight handling in competitive situations.
