Transformation of the Kawasaki KX450: The Twisted Development Garage Build

In a bold undertaking to enhance the performance of the Kawasaki KX450, Jamie Ellis of Twisted Development has unveiled a meticulously crafted upgrade named “Roxy.” This project was initiated after a conversation with Ellis post-Loretta Lynn’s 2025 AMA Amateur National Championships, where the stock KX450 had faced criticism.

The stock KX450 has been characterized as underwhelming; however, the Twisted Development team aimed to elevate its capabilities significantly. This Garage Build involved extensive modifications to push the KX450’s performance beyond typical limits.

Technical Specifications and Modifications:

  • Engine Modifications: The build features headwork, epoxy porting, custom J&E/TD Racing piston, custom valves and valve seats, a high-compression piston, and a custom camshaft paired with a mapped Vortex ECU.
  • Performance Enhancements: Transmission polishing, a power-flow kit, and a Ti-6 muffler system from Pro Circuit contribute to improved performance metrics.
  • Chassis and Suspension: The KX450 is equipped with 23mm offset split triple clamps, anti-twist bar mounts, re-valved and re-sprung suspension, and an Apex clutch kit from Rekluse.
  • Track-ready Components: A full set of components, including 13/50 sprockets, an ERT3 gold chain, and Dunlop MX3SF and MX34 tires, ensure optimal traction and handling.

The bike’s transformation not only boosts power but enhances rider control and comfort, challenging the notion of the KX450 as a leisurely machine. Early impressions suggest that “Roxy” delivers power that could redefine rider expectations and performance standards.

Jamie Ellis emphasized the goal of ensuring the modifications resulted in a bike that remains rideable, stating, “Our objective was not just to create raw power, but to enhance the overall riding experience.”

With the completion of this ambitious build, the KX450 re-emerges as a formidable contender ready for competitive excellence, showcasing the potential of effective engineering in motorsports.
