John Penton: A Legacy in Motorsports and Aftermarket Development

John Penton, a pivotal figure in the motorcycle industry, celebrates his 100th birthday this week in his hometown of Amherst, Ohio. Renowned not only for his achievements as a racer but also for his significant contributions to the motorcycle aftermarket, Penton’s influence is palpable across various facets of motorsports.

In partnership with Alpinestars, Penton developed the Hi-Point Racing boot, a staple for off-road riders in America. His entrepreneurial ventures extended to Hi-Point Racing trailers, lubricants, tires, riding apparel, and a wide range of accessories, establishing a robust brand that has become integral to competitive motorcycling.

Throughout his career, Penton sponsored legendary racers, including Bob Hannah and Dick Burleson. Notably, he supported his son, Jack Penton, and provided pivotal backing to 125cc supercross champion Jeremy McGrath, who emerged on the podium wearing Hi-Point gear during the 1990 Seattle Kingdome race.

A charter member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame since its inception in 1998, Penton’s contributions are celebrated annually at the John Penton GNCC in Millfield, Ohio—one of the longest-running events in the Grand National Cross Country Series.

As the motorsports community honors his century of influence, Penton’s legacy exemplifies innovative spirit and unwavering dedication to the sport.
