Team USA Faces Challenges Ahead of Motocross of Nations
As the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations looms on October 5th, Team USA finds itself in a precarious situation following the SMX World Championship finale in Las Vegas. In a tumultuous Saturday, two of the three riders designated for the team—Haiden Deegan and Chase Sexton—sustained injuries that raise doubts about their participation.
Deegan suffered a cracked collarbone after a collision while attempting to overtake Jo Shimoda, and Sexton crashed in the final 450 moto while placing fourth. KTM reported that Sexton is dealing with a mild concussion and a weak shoulder, necessitating further evaluation this week. As it stands, both riders are unlikely to compete at the MXoN.
In light of this, the AMA is exploring alternatives to fill the squad. The U.S. venue at Ironman Raceway offers a more accessible pool of riders. RJ Hampshire, Justin Cooper, and Cooper Webb have all indicated their willingness to join the team if called upon. Reportedly, Hampshire is poised to take on Sexton’s 450 spot, while both Webb and Cooper expressed readiness to race either bike. Webb notably stepped in on short notice last year with a 250cc machine, showcasing his adaptability.
As the situation unfolds, Team USA’s final roster remains uncertain, but support from seasoned riders could strengthen their chances in the upcoming event.
