MXGP Report: Febvre Dominates with 55th Career Victory
Lommel, Belgium – In a thrilling display of speed and strategy, Romain Febvre secured his 55th career Grand Prix victory at Round 12 of the FIM Motocross World Championship, extending his championship lead to 12 points. The event unfolded at the challenging Lommel circuit, where variable conditions tested the riders’ resilience.
Race One Highlights
Isak Gifting got off to a strong start on his Anniversary-liveried JK Racing Yamaha but was narrowly edged out by Febvre for the Fox Holeshot Award. KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings followed closely in third, while Brent Van Doninck and Jago Geerts rounded out the top five. Early misfortune plagued young talent Alessandro Bonacorsi, who fell in the first corner, relegating him to the back.
Just after the start, Jago Geerts made quick work of both Van Doninck and Gifting to move into fourth. Meanwhile, Febvre and Herlings battled at the front, setting the stage for an intense showdown. A pivotal moment came on lap two when Coenen executed a spectacular wall jump to pass Gifting, climbing to third, and soon after, he overtook Herlings for second. The two title contenders, Febvre and Coenen, engaged in a fierce duel.
The race took a dark turn for Geerts, who crashed heavily over a triple jump, though he walked away unharmed. In the chaos, Herlings fell to eighth position, but managed to reclaim eighth from Bonacorsi on the final lap.
Coenen closed in on Febvre but could not maintain momentum after a near-miss in the Lommelwood section. Febvre extended his lead, ultimately crossing the finish line first, with Coenen and Vlaanderen completing the podium.
Race Two Synopsis
The second race saw a significant turnaround as Jeffrey Herlings captured his first Fox Holeshot since October 2021. Initially holding the lead, Herlings was soon overtaken by Febvre on lap three. Vlaanderen moved up to fifth, indicating strong contention throughout the field.
As the battle intensified, it became clear that Febvre’s experience and tactical prowess would prove decisive. While Coenen exhibited remarkable speed, he was unable to reclaim the lead, ultimately finishing second behind Febvre once again.
In the overall standings, Febvre’s victory solidified his position as the frontrunner for the championship, while Coenen and Vlaanderen demonstrated impressive performances within the top tier.
This outcome reinforces Febvre’s status as a formidable contender, showcasing both his tactical racing skills and the unwavering support from the Belgian fans on home soil. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming rounds to see if any challengers can close the gap in the championship race.
