Forkner Prepares for 450 Debut at Anaheim
Anaheim, CA – Austin Forkner, stepping in for the sidelined Jordon Smith, is poised to make his 450 debut in the SMX series this weekend at Anaheim. Having recovered from various injuries, Forkner’s transition to the larger bike comes after roughly a month of adaptation and training.
In a recent interview on Jamie “Darkside” Guida’s Moto-X Pod, Forkner expressed confidence in his preparation: “I feel like I’m in a better spot this year on the 450 than I was last year on the 250.” Despite limited time on the bike, he noted improvements in his technique and fitness.
Forkner detailed the distinct riding style required for the 450: “You don’t have to ride a 450 as hard. Yes, they’re bigger, heavier, faster, but you can roll through a turn and just get on it up the face.” He emphasized that this approach allows for more fluid riding which should play to his strengths, particularly as he manages ongoing physical challenges.
Reflecting on his mindset, he acknowledged some trepidation in adjusting to the power of the 450 but remained optimistic: “I can kind of just cruise it a little bit more, and I have a really smooth riding style.” He believes this could reduce the likelihood of injury, stating, “Whenever you’re pushing… you take a bigger chance of dabbing a knee.”
Forkner’s initial focus will be on the first five races, after which decisions regarding his future in the 450 category or a return to the 250SX East will be made in conjunction with team assessments.
As the motorsport community looks on, Forkner’s performance at Anaheim will not only mark a new chapter in his career but also serve as a critical test of his resilience and adaptability in the fiercely competitive landscape of supercross racing.
