Memorial Report: Curt Leaverton, Founder of VintCo, Passes Away at 61
Date: July 12, 2025
Location: Des Moines, Iowa
Curt Leaverton, age 61, the owner of VintCo and a prominent figure in the motorsports and motorcycle aftermarket industry, tragically died on July 12 due to injuries sustained from a freak bicycle accident. While preparing for the Colorado 500 charity ride, a water-logged tree fell on him on a local bicycle trail.
Leaverton’s impact on the motorcycle community is rooted in his passion for the sport, which began in his youth with an OSSA 250 Pioneer. His engineering background—holding a degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University and an MBA from Drake University—guided him to innovate within the aftermarket motorcycle sector.
In 1993, he launched Hot Rods, focusing on manufacturing connecting rods, which expanded into a successful range of brands, including Pivot Works, Hot Cams, Cylinder Works, and Wrench Rabbit. Later, under the C&L Companies umbrella, he added the Italian piston brand Vertex to his product lineup. His latest venture, VintCo, was dedicated to supporting the vintage motorcycle market, honoring the same spirit that sparked his original passion.
Leaverton was known for nurturing relationships across the global motorcycle community and remained an influential mentor to many. A car racing enthusiast and fervent AC/DC fan, he cherished his time with family, particularly his two granddaughters.
Services in Iowa are forthcoming. The VintCo team is committed to continuing his legacy by providing parts and support for vintage bikes, ensuring that Leaverton’s vision remains alive in the motorsports community. He will be profoundly missed.
